With 90-degree temperatures expected for NYC through this weekend, it's crucial to focus on staying cool as the summer heat intensifies. The 12 percent rate increase by Con Edison over three years doesn’t make it easier, but fortunately, there are several effective strategies to keep cool and save on energy costs.
Maintaining your AC unit is essential for its efficiency. Regularly cleaning your AC filter ensures that cold air keeps flowing. Proper insulation around your AC unit can prevent cool air from escaping, enhancing the unit's performance.
Improving your home's insulation is another effective strategy. Ensure that walls and areas where air can leak, such as windows and doors, are sealed. Weather stripping is a less invasive yet effective way of preventing the leakage of cool air. Energy-efficient window coverings, such as blackout curtains or cellular shades can block out heat during the day. Additionally, keeping your blinds or shades closed during peak times, typically between 2 and 7 pm, will significantly reduce the load on your air conditioning system.
If you prefer not to completely block out natural light, consider installing window films. These films absorb solar energy and block up to 99 percent of UV rays, protecting you and your furniture from sun damage. Window films can cut utility costs by 30-40 percent, though there are some stipulations to be aware of before investing.
To optimize your home's temperature, consider installing a smart thermostat. These devices can automatically adjust the temperature when you're not home, reducing unnecessary energy consumption. Additionally, using fans and positioning them strategically to optimize air circulation will allow you to set your thermostat higher without sacrificing comfort. If you have a ceiling fan, make sure the blades are moving counterclockwise to create the coolest breeze.
Some lesser-known solutions include turning on your built-in exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen, as they help filter out hot air. Energy-efficient light bulbs, like LED bulbs, reduce the amount of heat produced inside your apartment. Also, consider using appliances that generate less heat, such as air fryers and slow cookers, instead of ovens and stoves during the hot summer months.
Lastly, adjusting your bedding can help you stay comfortable at night. Switching to lightweight bedding and using cooling pillows can make a big difference in your comfort, reducing the need to keep the air conditioning on high.
By adopting some or all of these strategies, you can enjoy a cooler home and reduce your energy bills this summer. Stay cool and hydrated as we take on what is expected to be another hot summer in the city.
