Sugar Hill

Sugar Hill is said to be part of Harlem as well as Hamilton Heights. Roughly bound from West 145th to 155th Streets and West and Edgecombe to Amsterdam Avenues, it is an historic enclave listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's filled with lovely brownstone row homes, stately apartment houses and mansions that were once homes to the likes of Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., US Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall, Joe Lewis, Langston Hughes and W.E.B. Du Bois. Dubbed Sugar Hill ("the sweet life") in the 1920s when wealthy families settled in the beautiful homes during the Harlem Renaissance.

Fun Fact: Jules Bledsoe, who premiered "Ol' Man River in the original production of Showboat lived at 432 Edgecombe Avenue.
