Washington Heights

Washington Heights, from 155th Street to Dyckman Street between the Harlem and Hudson Rivers, is home to residents who like to shop locally, particularly along Broadway. New restaurants open often, but residents still seek out the fabulous longtime eateries like the Mamajuana Café and El Malecon.

Fort Tryon Park helps anchor this neighborhood, but there are also smaller green spaces, including High Bridge and Bennett Park. Fort Tryon Park has a great dog run. Renovated over the years, it has a wonderful recreation center with a swimming pool, BBQ areas and ball fields. A branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cloisters located in Fort Tryon Park, is devoted to the art and architecture of the European Middle Ages.

Fun Facts: Washington Heights inspired the Tony-winning Broadway musical "In the Heights;" the Morris-Jumel Mansion, which served as General Washington's headquarters in the fall of 1776 was originally part of a farm belonging to the naturalist John James Audubon.

Housing Stock: Mostly mid-rise pre-war apartment buildings, row houses, high-rise co-op complexes, post-war co-op, condo and rental high-rise apartment buildings.
