Experience the Music of West Harlem

The sounds of West Harlem have captivated musicians, enthusiasts, and novices alike for generations. Long an epicenter for jazz and international music, the area is still home to some of New York City’s most sought-after live venues. Here are a few of our favorites that are worth exploring.

Harlem Stage

Harlem Stage is the premier venue in West Harlem, in our view. It's a gem of Upper Manhattan that highlights venerable musicians and experimental performances. The intimate performing arts center is part of the "Gatehouse," an historic structure that was part of the Croton Aqueduct System. Led by esteemed Patricia Cruz, Harlem Stage continually delivers quality programming in music and more!

Marjorie Elliot's Parlour

Tourists from around the globe make a point of visiting Marjorie Elliot’s Parlour at 555 Edgecombe Ave in Washington Heights. Marjorie has been hosting jazz in her living room for over a decade. Show up around 3pm, and the music starts around 3:30. It’s free, donations are accepted, and you don’t have to be a tourist to go!

Smoke

We asked one of our talented musician friends what his recs were in the West Harlem area, and he pointed out that Smoke on Broadway between 105 and 106 is “a true jazz club, offering some of the best in the city." We tend to agree.

The Craftsman

If you enjoy a quality cocktail along with some music, then visit The Craftsman on Broadway below the elevated #1 train tracks, just south of Columbia’s new campus. Stop by at 8:30pm on Sundays for a fun jazz jam or on the last Tuesday of the month for live Brazilian music. Oh...and did we mention they make a mean cocktail?

Jazzmobile

It’s summertime, so we would be remiss in not mentioning the very popular jazz series by Jazzmobile. It is held at Grant’s Tomb every Wednesday at 7pm through September 23. Bring a chair, pick a spot under one of the lovely trees along the plaza, sit back, relax and your feet will be tappin.’

(Sadly one of the newest spots that we’ve been enjoying called The Porch has recently closed, but keep an eye on their IG! We wouldn’t be surprised if this owner pops up with a re-invention.
