A Piece of Film History: D.A. Pennebaker’s Sag Harbor Home Finds a New Owner

By Ashley Brennan

The Sag Harbor home of legendary documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker has officially changed hands, selling for $1.7 million in just one week.

Pennebaker, a pioneer of cinema vérité and the creative force behind classics like Don’t Look Back and The War Room, purchased the charming 1860s-era residence in the 1970s.

For more than five decades, the historic shingle-sided house on Garden Street was filled with life, creativity, and memories, shared with his wife and fellow filmmaker Chris Hegedus.

Listed exclusively by Brown Harris Stevens agents Linley Hagen and Kim Kakerbeck, the 888-square-foot home is rich in period details.

It features two bedrooms, one bathroom, a vaulted second floor, stained-glass touches, and the rare Sag Harbor perk of off-street parking.

Its welcoming front porch and corner location place it just steps from the village’s lively Main Street.

While small in size, the home holds outsized cultural significance. As Hagen reflected, “It was always alive and well lived in, full of excitement for the five decades the owners lived there.”

Though bittersweet for Hegedus to part with the residence, the sale marks the passing of a torch. The home now has new stewards ready to honor its history while shaping its next chapter.

Much like Pennebaker’s films, which revealed the authentic and unvarnished stories of American life, this Sag Harbor home continues to tell a story of its own: one that will evolve with its new owners while holding on to its remarkable past.
