This week we spotlight Seth A. Cohen, a top agent in our Miami Continuum office with a distinguished background as a professional sports agent. In the interview, he shares the crossover between sports and real estate, the story behind a headline-making NBA draft pick, what makes the Miami Beach market so resilient, and why mid-beach is the go-to neighborhood for Miami Heat players.
What is the greatest similarity between the work of a sports agent and that of a real estate agent?
Service. Service. Service.
What is your favorite sports agent story?
When I sent shock waves through the entire sports world by getting Cam Johnson (University of North Carolina) drafted lottery with the 11th pick by the Phoenix Suns in the 2019 NBA Draft, making him one of the oldest lottery picks ever selected in NBA Draft history.
What is your best real estate agent story?
It’s still being written. I’m always looking ahead and to stay competitive with myself.
How do you see the Miami Beach market in general performing right now based on your recent agent experiences?
To put it in sports terms, Miami Beach defies the off season. It’s a world renowned, sexy and magical city.
With the upcoming Collective Bargaining Agreement in the WNBA, where women made headlines of “Pay Us What You Owe Us” shirts at the All Star Game, what do you think will be the eventual solution?
I’m an advocate for the WNBA. The solution will come down to economics. NBA salaries have increased exponentially, largely due to the recent TV deal ($76 billion over 11 years, up from $24 billion for the previous 11-year period). The more revenue the WNBA brings in, the greater their negotiating power and salaries will be.
If you had to entertain a client where are you taking them and what are you ordering?
There are so many great restaurants to choose from in Miami, with new ones opening all the time. Wherever I go, I love to go all out when I order.
Where is the most desirable neighborhood for Miami Heat players and why?
Miami Beach, hands down, specifically the mid-beach section. It’s the quiet residential part of the beach with close proximity to everything, including the arena, where players spend most of their time since it serves as both the practice facility and game venue.
