Recently named a Crain's New York Business Notable Leader in Real Estate, Brown Harris Stevens CMO Matthew Leone has successfuly ushered the storied, 150-year-old firm into the 21st century. In the last two years alone, the firm has undertaken an aggressive and successful digital marketing transformation, establishing a viral TikTok account, one of the most-visited real estate blogs in the industry, and an eye-catching, futuristic advertising campaign

For Leone, innovation needs to be embraced openly, yet strategically. From assessing trends and new technologies to targeting specific audiences, he and his award-winning BHS Marketing Team are continuously looking for ways to expand and refine the firm's digital strategy. We recently sat down with Leone, who discussed how he embraces change, ways real estate agents and other professionals can gain visibility amid the dynamic digital age, and more.

  1. The Crain’s New York list honors real estate leaders who embrace innovation. What does “innovation” mean to you?

Innovation to me is leveraging emerging trends, mediums and technologies in creative ways enable our agents and clients to reach the right audience in a positive light and shine.

  1. How does the digital marketing landscape of today compare to that of 20 years ago, when you first entered the field?

The social media and streaming video revolution make up the largest change. Everything is enhanced or driven by the various mediums that consistently connect us with our clients. The ability to use data and algorithmic tools to better target your audience, and make informed decisions so that your end result is more effective, has also been a gamechanger. Overall, we simply have smarter ways to engage and educate our clients today.

  1. What tips do you have for real estate agents looking to boost the presence online?

Every agent should be using an AI powered CRM for their everyday prospecting, actively pushing out content on social media that informs their client on the market and other points of knowledge. It's important to stay top of mind where 90% of your business comes from:  your sphere of influence.

  1. Since becoming CMO of Brown Harris Stevens, what is your proudest accomplishment?

My proudest accomplishment is building this team that we currently have at BHS that can now support Agents in their marketing endeavors in every possible fashion. We now have a full video production team in house, a content studio, upcoming podcasting network launch, two successful branding campaigns in as many years,  and so much more because of the collective talent on this team supporting the best agents in this industry.
