Remembering Legendary New Development Marketing Visionary Nancy Packes

By BHS Content Team

The New York real estate industry has lost one of its most influential and respected figures. Nancy Packes, whose vision and insight helped shape the modern landscape of residential development in New York City, has died at the age of 80.

A pioneer, mentor, strategist, and industry trailblazer, Packes spent nearly five decades helping define how residential buildings were conceived, designed, marketed, leased, and sold. Her influence can be seen across neighborhoods throughout New York City and in countless developments that changed the way New Yorkers live.

Packes’ path to real estate was anything but conventional. A graduate of the New York University School of Law, she practiced trial law for seven years before embarking on a career that would ultimately transform an industry.

In 1977, she founded Feathered Nest, a residential brokerage that quickly became one of New York City’s most prominent firms. Under her leadership, Feathered Nest earned a reputation for innovation and excellence, helping elevate professional standards across the brokerage community. In 1998, she sold the company to Terra Holdings, marking the end of one successful chapter and the beginning of another.

Following the sale, Packes founded Nancy Packes Inc., a consulting firm specializing in residential design development, marketing, leasing, and sales. Over the next three decades, she advised many of the city’s most respected developers, including Forest City Ratner, Douglaston Development, The Durst Organization, and The Witkoff Group. Her work helped bring some of New York’s most significant residential projects to market, while her company grew into one of the industry’s most trusted advisory firms.

In the 1980s, she helped establish ethical guidelines for the Real Estate Board of New York, shaping standards that continue to guide the industry today. Later, she became known for her ability to identify emerging trends before others saw them, influencing everything from apartment layouts and amenity offerings to leasing strategies and building design. Among the developments she helped shape was New York by Gehry, one of the city’s most iconic residential towers.

For many, Packes served as a mentor. Among those she influenced was Josh Young, Head of the Young New Development Group at Brown Harris Stevens.

“I had the privilege of working alongside Nancy for many years during my time at DDNY and throughout that time I never stopped admiring her fearless approach and extraordinary vision. Nancy had a remarkable ability to see possibilities before anyone else and the confidence to pursue them with conviction. She challenged conventional thinking, elevated everyone around her, and helped shape the way New York lives today.

I learned so much from her, not just about real estate, but about believing in your instincts, embracing creativity, and never being afraid to take bold positions. She was a true pioneer, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to have worked with her and to have called her a friend. Her legacy will continue to inspire our decisions and shape the New York City skyline.”
