Neighborhood Stories

Before there was a Clinton Hill, there was simply a hill—one of Brooklyn’s highest—overlooking Dutch tobacco plantations and Wallabout Harbor. In 1832, Clinton Avenue was laid out along the crest and soon lined with mansions for notable families like the Rockefellers, Pratts, Vanderbilts, and Underwoods. Today, Clinton Hill is home to two college campuses, historic 19th-century brownstones and mansions, former Navy housing now the Clinton Hill Co-ops, and some of Brooklyn’s oldest prewar co-ops. It’s also a dining destination, with restaurants like Emily’s Pizza and Sailor’s Seafood.
