Tom leaned against the windowsill and gave a short laugh. "He always says that, doesn't he? "Don't worry, it'll be fine." And somehow, it's never fine."
"I know," she replied, shaking her head. "I should've listened to my gut. The moment he said, "Trust me," I knew I shouldn't have."
Outside, the rain tapped against the window. Tom glanced at his watch. "It's almost 8. I've got to go soon, but I'll stay if you need me."
"No, it's fine," Maria said, though her voice faltered. "I'll be okay. It's just... sometimes I wonder if I'm the problem. Maybe I'm too trusting, too hopeful. It's not like I don't see the red flags-I just choose to ignore them."
Tom frowned. "That's not weakness, Maria. That's hope. And there's nothing wrong with hoping people will do the right thing. Even if they don't."
Maria sighed. "You're too kind, Tom. That's why you're still here, even when I'm at my worst."
"Well," he said with a grin, "I did promise I'd always be around. And I'm not the type to break a promise, am I?"
