From the early 1800's, living "on the Heights" has been considered a pleasure and a privilege and this townhouse is a sterling example of why that is so. Built mid-nineteenth century on one of the quietest blocks in the Historic District, it is on the widest North-South street, with East-West exposures, and enjoys abundant light from dawn to dusk.

The style is Greek Revival with Italianate details. With the most desirable classic proportions, it is 25 feet wide and 52 feet deep on a 100 foot lot and configured as a quadruplex over a garden simplex. There are 16 rooms, six bedrooms, five and one half baths on five floors, providing approximately 6,475 square feet of living space. The full-height cellar houses mechanicals and provides excellent storage.

The facade, stoop and ironwork are in beautiful restored condition. The parlor floor comprises an elegant living room with long windows, a formal dining room, a sitting room and a kitchen. In the sitting room, French doors open to a terrace overlooking a park-like, verdant and private rear garden. Three bedrooms, two baths and a laundry room are on the second floor, and the luxurious third floor master suite includes a bedroom, master bath, library with woodburning fireplace, wet bar, and a chamber suitable for an office or dressing room. The deep, full-width terrace on this floor has access from the library and master bath. The top floor of the house, originally attic space, was re-engineered to accommodate a gym, steam shower with skylight and media room. The floor-through apartment on the garden floor offers a private, below stoop entrance. Access from the parlor floor to the garden level and the full basement below is by a separate staircase and hallway.

Historic architectural details include carved white marble fireplace surrounds, inlaid hardwood floors and ornate carved plasterwork, all beautifully restored and preserved. Throughout the house, doors and cabinetry are custom milled with period-appropriate brass fittings. Exquisite crystal chandeliers and brass sconces provide lighting on the parlor floor. Electrical, plumbing and heating systems were upgraded and the house has 4-zone central air conditioning, a gas fired furnace and hot water heater.

From the 19th century to the present, demand for townhouse living on the Heights has exceeded supply. Scarcer still is a historic house of grand proportions, beautifully sited, renovated to a high standard and in move-in condition.
