The history:

This meticulously restored and maintained brownstone was designed by Thom & Wilson for the developers John T. and James A. Farley in 1890. Built in a suave and reserved Renaissance style, 131 West 71st has truly unique and elegant details, all of which have been perfectly restored to their original beauty. All bathrooms and the wonderful kitchen have been renovated, but in keeping with the period, are done in natural stones and muted colors, often incorporating original woodwork.

Since 1891 there have only been 4 owners. The second one, the Everson family, owned the house from 1896 to 1980 when the house was donated to the neighboring church, the Grace & St. Paul's Lutheran Church. In 1993 the Church sold the house.

The house:

The grand stoop of this brownstone leads one through impressive oak doors and into an oak paneled entryfoyer with an exquisite inlaid floor and original mahogany mirror. The impressive original staircase is showcased here. The formal parlor with its delicate lincrusta frieze and mahogany woodwork spills into an oak wainscoted livingroom with coffered ceiling and magnificent wood burning fireplace. Dramatic Greek Key bordered floors have been fully restored and the original pocket doors separate the rooms. A sweeping elliptical rear staircase sunlit by a 16ft leaded glass window leads you to the formal dining room, kitchen and garden below.

The garden is wonderfully private and landscaped with a gas grill. It is peaceful and sheltered from wind and gets excellent light. Off the garden is the formal dining room and fabulous chef's eat in kitchen. The kitchen is complete with a new Wolf Stove with large griddle and 2 ovens, warming drawer, new "Viking pro 48" (professional 48 inch) industrial sub zero refrigerator, great cabinet and counter space and a powder room with original wood wainscoting. In front of the kitchen is a second powder room, a fabulous guest room or staff room with full bathroom and access to the street under the stop. There is also storage under the stoop.

The second floor has the luxurious master suite with sumptuous tasteful marble bathroom with steam shower and a fireplace. A spectacular Birdseye maple dressing room with original shaving sink separates the bedroom from a mahogany library by two sets of original pocket doors. The south facing library has a wood burning fireplace and exquisite moldings.

The third floor has two bedrooms, one with a fireplace and a lovely terrace and the other south facing also with a fireplace. Each has its own original mahogany dressing room, each with a shaving sink. These bedrooms are serviced by a large hall bath with white beaded board wainscoting and a spa tub.

The fourth floor has three more sun-filled bedrooms and two fully renovated and restored bathrooms. The original tiffany skylight has also been restored. There are also 2 fireplaces and a washer dryer hook up on this floor, (the laundry room is in the basement.) There is access to the roof on this floor, which could be decked.

The finished cellar is accessed by stairs from the kitchen. A fully equipped laundryroom with kitchenette is adjacent to two large open rooms which serve as play rooms or exercise rooms. There are also smaller rooms which could easily become a wine cellar and cedar closets. The mechanicals are completely enclosed in their own room.

This home is truly special in every way. Located on a quiet but very centrally located tree lined block, it is very close to Central Park and Riverside Park, as well as the express subway stop, the best dining, shopping and schools. It has been perfectly restored and renovated, combining the best of the old and the new.
